the description of the Young gay French speaking Catholic pretender's
supporters as being mainly "catholic tribesman" seems fair comment to
me,

No. Many were their because their Chief or landlord called them out. It
wasn't a war between branches of the Christian Church, english vs scots or
anything else that simple. It was about a couple of men who each thought
they should be running the country and didn't care who died as long as
they got their way. It was about people who honestly believed in one cause
or the other and thought they had the right to kill to impose their belief
on others. And the others who saw soial, political or financial gain from
being on the winning side and didn't care who died as long as they got
what they wanted. And on both sides, as always, were the foot soldiers (in
this case on the scots side mostly subsistence farmers who had to turn out
when the boss called as a condition of their rent for their homes) who
turned out because they had to. No doubt there were plenty of other
reasons.

Lesley, I posted some links upthread and a couple of interesting quotes. One
was a diary entry made at the time about the treatment of the enemy after
Gladsmuir. BPC stopped the slaughter and had the wounded of both armies
treated at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. This contrasts with the treatment
dished out the next year at Culloden Moor.
