Ever have a horrible week. I'm having one and today I am having a day
away from the world as Western Islesmen call the Sabbath. It isn't the
Sabbath in reality; it's Thursday, but it will do.
So I have a quarter bottle of whisky before me and I am playing Gaelic
songs to myself to make myself homesick and get the weakness out of my
soul. As my Grandfather said, "Never drink gin because gin just makes
you pee and that's what's wrong with the English; they're all
bedwetters! Drink whisky, because whisky makes you brave!"
So here is a song I'm going to play for you, called
Biodh an deoch seo 'n làimh mo rùin
the drink would be in my love's hand.
(It often was, accompanied by the words, "Michael! You've had enough
to drink; you're getting maudlin!" You bet, but now there's no one
left to stop me...)
This is by a girl called Julie Fowlis from North Uist, a lady with a
name of great antiquity, a lady who is a fast rising star in the world
of Gaelic music. She has several hits out there in the weird and
wonderful world of the Gael. She's also easy on the eye, which never
hurts in showbiz; Gaelic or otherwise.

Part of the reason I like this song is because it is the only one I
know of in the 20th and 21st centuries which mentions the Isle of Rum,
aka home sweet home.
Here are the Gaelic words to annoy you, along with the obligatory
English translation to smooth your ruffled feathers. The downloadable
songs are futher down.

Òladh neo na òladh càch i
Biodh i làn aig ceann a' bhùird
Whether he or the others were drinking
There would still be plenty on the table (dream on!!!)
Chorus (after each verse):
Biodh an deoch seo 'n làimh mo rùin
Deoch slàinte le fear an tùir
The drink would be in my love's hand
Here's a health to the chief
Biodh an deoch seo 'n làimh mo rùin
The drink would be in my love's hand
Chunnacas bàt' air an fhairge
'S an làimh dhearg air an stiùir
A boat was seen on the waves
And the red hand at the helm
Chunnaic mi dol seach' an caol i
'S badan fraoich 's an t-slait shiùil
I saw it passing through the straits
With a clump of heather on the sail-yard
Fhir a chunnaic air an t-sàil i
Beannaich an long bhàn 's a criùdh'
You who saw her out at sea
Bless the fair ship and her crew
Beannaich a cruinn àrd 's a h-acfhuinn
A cuid acraichean 's a siùil
Bless her high masts and her equipment
Her moorings and her sails
Ged a tha mi 'n seo an Colla
B' e mo thoil a dhol a Rùm
Though I am here in Coll
I long to go to Rhum
Agus as a sin a dh' Uibhist
Nan d' fhuair mi mo ghuidhe leam
And from there to Uist
Were I to get my wish.

I'm sad to hear that, Highlander, but cheer up, Spring is on the way with
longer days and more sun.
Spring is well underway here in North Carolina which means I'm spending much
more time in the yard, which means I'm feeling much better.
In the meantime, pop some Omega 3 Fish oil capsules.
(I'm serious here)
