My own feelings are that few people could carry out such crimes as killing
their baby from jealousy or raping a fatally injured step-daughter unless
their heads were wasted by some kind of brain damage or drug/drink
degeneration.
With respect, that argument stems from a certain lack of imagination.
I think that a lot of people are quite simply evil, but decent people just
can't conceive of just 'how' evil and have to find some other 'reason' in
order to personally assimilate such shocking information.
Excusing the actions of the purely evil by saying 'they must be mad or out
of their heads on drugs' is just too easy; it diminishes both their
responsibility and culpability and gives genuinely mad people (not mention
responsible drug-users) a bad name.
It takes great effort simply to remain humanly decent and there are a lot of
*profoundly* lazy people around.
Cease from effort and everything in the universe tends to decay.
As my cheery mentor Yeats succinctly put it:
"...Things fall apart - the centre cannot hold.
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed and everywhere;
The ceremoney of innocense is drowned..."
