This is undoubtedly correct.
It is also the history of conflict.
It is all a question of degree, I think.

For years Britain was happy (enough) to accept immigration,
but what has happened is a new reality that people hitherto have
not taken on board. It is the notion that in 40 years this country
has taken, (I will not use the word 'assimilated' ) millions of
people
whose way of life customs and religion is different to that of
the majority of the populaton.

I would hazard a bet that people were saying that when St Columba
arrived
in
Scotland.
Then we had something similar going on with the various factions of
Christianity who fought with one another through the centuries from
then
on.
I would believe that at the time Angles, Jutes and Saxons arrived in
Britain
there was also a similar effect as there was when the Romans got here.
Seems to me there was a bit of trouble to with the Poles during WWII.
Then
again the Scots were not too happy when Edward came with his redcoats.
Need
I go on?

That is the foundation of the problems we see today.
I cannot foresee that a time will come when this will not
be and not produce problems in Britain. I look around me and
cannot see a single example of a country that has managed
to make a favourable accomodation at any time in history.

Err! They call us Scots now but at one time we were Picts. Before that
we
would have belonged to one or other of the old tribes of the Novanti,
Selgovii, Cornovii, Caerenti, Smertae, Lugi, Carnovacae, Decantae,
Vacomagi,
Creonis, Caladonii, Veniconis, Damnoni, Otadini, Epidii, Taezali. I
don't
know if anyone lived here before that. However all of these were
assimilated
and eventually from that rich soup tribes came us. Add in an influx of
Italians who set up chip shops, cafes, ice-cream parlours, a garage or
two
and a band of travelling showmen and musicians, a few Frenchmen during
tha
Auld Alliance, the odd one or two other nationals and give it a good
stir -
now add in the Irish catholics and protestants as a garnish and the
modern
day Scots are the item on the menu. Assimillation is part of our
history
and
it will always be thus for that is the nature of the human race.

Of course, I do agree that in the long run an accommodation
WILL take place. In true abstract terms that must be the so,
but the price may be the destruction of our entire way of life
and of the very people who to this present era have
called themselves the British people, or Scottish, if you wish.
(I use these appelations so that there is no mystery about
the nature of which I speak. I am not interested in word games.)

That has always been the way of it. If the normal scientific and
engineering
don't change things the changing climate will. After all it is only a
couple
of thousand years since the ice went back north and left the rich
coal,
clay, sand, minerals and gravel beds that were our life-blood from the
first
peoples until now.

It is arguable in the stuffy ivory towers of university staff
rooms that in the long run it does not matter, black, white,
coffee coloured or whatever. This may in fact be a truism,
but in the here and now of modern Europe it may be just
one huge challenge that we do not need for as long as any
one of us will live.

I'm not alone in thinking we're aa Jock Tamson's Bairns and I don't
give
a
damn if my next door neighbour is a different religion, colour or
creed
from
mine. I will take him or her as I find them. I,ve even got an
Englishman
as
a next door neighbour.

Bottom line is.
It does not matter if it does not matter to you.
Does it matter to them....??????

Removed in time and space and not least in ethnic character,
I have always found the 'Columba' argument to be a bit of a
red herring bearing no relationship to the issues, and therefore
bringing little that is relevant to the table.

At the times you speak of the population of the UK was
less than the number of immigrants in the last 40 years.

There is no correlation whatsoever, in fact.

All I was pointing out is that wandering off to another place is the way
mankind has always behaved and that is how he has populated the World and
is
now reaching out into space. It is our nature to always be looking for
something different or perhaps something newer. Perhaps it is for better
farmland, better mineral resources, better fishing grounds, better
hunting,
better looking burds or the very famous, "Just because it's there".
Whatever
it is we were born under a wandering star. It has always been this way
and
it always will.

Can't disagree with that.

Mind you.....
Peo'le goin' oot is wan thing,
Peo'le comin' in is annither. ;-)

You know what? That is exactly what the North American peoples said when the
Europeans were killing them off. So did the Abos in Aus and the Africans
when the whites were taking them prisoner. Then there was the peoples of
South America when the Spanish were stealing their gold.
