What everyone seems to be missing is that Islam is also (perhaps even

What you seem to be missing is the fact that the cartoons were

Sure - blame the messenger. It's always the west who are 'stirring it up'
eh?
The people *I* see stirring up trouble are the tens of thousands of thugs
world-wide who are using the cartoons as the next convenient excuse to
further the muslim agenda yet one small step further.
Wake up FFS!

and that
the trouble is largely being provided by "rent-a-mobs", as is shown by
yesterday's news about the convicted drug dealer from Bedford who has
been returned to jail to serve the remainder of his original sentence
after taking part. He himself apparently admitted that he had been
"stupid".

Do try not to be so parochial.
There are tens of thousands of the thugs reacting all over the world - here
in NZ included.
Are they *all* rented do you think?

It's a pretty silly issue to hold up as the banner for the "freedom of
speech" movement, IMHO,

Well obviously I disagree - I think you are sleepwalking.
Freedom of expression is *the* hard won base rock on which all our other
freedoms have been built.
It's sad that the west are willing to surrender it so meekly.
Time will prove me right as always.

and far less one where "we" should be
considering some sort of violent reaction to the rent-a-mobs.

Who is considering a violent reaction other than the muslim thugs? I haven't
seen any myself.
I am certainly not advocating any if that's what you are implying.
I am merely advocating that the publication of political satire is allowed
to continue in Britain - as it has done for hundreds of years.

It is also not a case of anyone "backing down", but just easing off so
that the heat goes out of the whole thing, which it will do.

Of course it is a case of backing down.
The heat will go out of it if we assure the muslims we will never again use
satire to illustrate the truth about their disgusting beliefs.
That is what they are demanding.
I can't believe that everyone is quite happy to accede to these demands
whilst they themselves create shrines in Pakistan to the 'martyrs' that
murdered Londoners just a few short months ago.
Unbelievable.

If you want to call that "appeasement", then so be it....

Of course it is appeasement.
IMO free speech includes the right to criticise the encouragement of the
murder of innocents in the country of my birth.
That is what the cartoons were doing.
What a sad, pathetic group of countries the UK has become.
You deserve all you get.
