Ah, you have unwittingly said something wise. Quite surprising.
Panic is what will get us in the end. Not the danger itself but the panic induced by perceived danger. Panic over yellow cake and panic over contagion. Ill-preparedness and panic. As long as loose fissionable materials can cause the level of panic it takes to lead a country to war there is no way it should be endorsed because it cannot be safeguarded effectively. The stuff will get out and people will play their games with it and with the idea of it getting out. For nuclear power to really be safe you would need to change human nature. Good luck with that. Let me know how it works out for you (big thumbs up).
This is what I mean by you can't debate this topic with laymen...they don't know what they're talking about, can't be a*sed to do any real research and won't listen to anything which contradicts what they want to believe.
You know what? I would like for you to be right Deirdre because it might make you a happier person. Sadly we'll never know. It would be really great if nuclear power were safe. Potentially it could be but it never will be because humans are unfortunately involved in the equation. It would be really great if people did not try to play power games with the by products of nuclear power generation but sadly they do and because they do it will never really be safe or seen as safe which amounts to the same thing in the end. If it can be misused or abused either physically or politically then people will try it on. They have certainly done so with other power sources and you can absolutely point at both petrochemicals and the threat of nuclear weapons as reasons for the current conflicr in Iraq. So...given that humans are part of the equation I think something else will have to be arrived at. So throw your little hands up at the stupid humans but they are running the place. It must frustrate you Ubermenschen no end.
But thanks for playing. Perhaps a door prize can be arranged for both Bob and Deirdre.
