I didn't, as it turned out. I believe she was flabbergasted to the
point of inaction.
I'm reminded of another incident when I was about 10-12 years old. My
family was 'big' on corny (stupid) jokes. I don't recall the joke, but
remember (after all these years) the punch-line was, "What's it to ya?"
Whenever the joke was told, the listener would 'guffaw' and respond as
it it was the funniest thing in the world.
I'd just returned from a party at a little girlfriend's house. My aunt
was visiting. She asked me if I'd had a good time at the party, and I
made the mistake of replying "What's it to ya?" thinking it would get a
huge laugh, and people would think I was clever and funny. Big mistake.
My mother grabbed a closed umbrella, and beat me within (what seemed to
be) an inch of my life. I loved my aunt, and would never have been,
intentionally, rude to her.
It seemed like my mother sort of 'flipped out' and didn't know when to
stop. This is one of the reasons that I'm pretty much against corporal
punishment. People can get really caught up in it, and carried away.
My mother was unpredictable, and almost seemed to pride herself on being
a bundle of nerves. Lots of drama, usually. Believe it or not, I was a
very well-behaved kid, for the most part, and never really gave my
parents a moment's worry. Always did as I was told, etc. Having no
siblings, there was nobody to get into mischief with.
