Ah..

Am I correct in thinking you're a fan of the penguin ?
(Linux)

Why do you say that?

Just had an idea you used Linux.

I'm thinking of putting Debian on a laptop
and assuming I may need some pointers.

Sorry no. MacOS for Usenet and email, WinXP for most other
things. Tried running Mandrake a few years back, but
there were few apps then.

The only tip I can offer is that if you plan a dual boot machine,
make sure Linux is on the first 2 Gb of the hard disk. It doesn't
(or didn't) like its boot sector outside that. Best idea is to install Linux first, then the second OS - that way you shouldn't have a problem.

I use Linux, my main (work) box is Fedora Core 3, my file and print server and family box is Red Hat 9, my firewall is Red Hat 7.2. The boot issue was with the Lilo boot loader AFAIK, the current popular bot loader is GRUB, I don't think it has the problem. If it still does, you still don't have to install the *entire* os in the first 7 GB, just the boot partition (<10mb).

I can answer questions if you like.

Do you promise to tell the truth, the whole truth
and nothing but the truth ?

Cross my fingers and hope to die.

I've got copies of Debian 3.0r2 and Mandrake 9.2 here I've been told that the Debian is the one to go for.

Comment ?

AFAIR Mandrake was an extension of Red Hat. But since RH stopped releasing desktop distributions (the last was 9.0) I don't know what the current base of Mandrake (Mandriva?) is. RH does distribute Fedora but it not an official product. I haven't used Debian, I think it's a bit leaner space wise.

I currently use Fedora Core 3 with the kitchen sink thrown in for my work machine, I need both KDE *and* Gnome applications and tool kits plus a full development environment. I've been using Red Hat releases since 1995 so I'm kind of used to it.

My guess is that Mandrake will be easier to install, Debian is a bit more nerdly. Also, more add on software comes in RPM packages then .deb packages so unless you don't mind compiling stuff from code (not hard, I only do it that way if possible) you may want to go with Mandrake.
