At Holy Cross in Edinburgh, French was compulsory and German was an opt
in. I had to do Latin for the first two years as I was in an 'A' class.
If you were in a 'B' or 'C' class you did techie drawing. Considering
that i went on to become an Engineer in the Merchant Navy, guess what i
would rather have taken?
Having said that, Latin has been slightly useful over the years in
learning other languages. Not as useful however as one of my teachers
used to tell us. He insisted that he was on a train in Italy with an
Italian who couldn't speak *nglish, so they communicated through Latin!
Yeah, right!
