An unknown offender took two women hostage at a central post office in
Moscow and requested political asylum in the United States, Regnum news
agency reported Thursday.

Early on Thursday morning, a young man arrived at a post office in central
Moscow shortly after the post office opened, a police source told Regnum
correspondent. The man was armed with a knife as he took two female
employees hostage.

On the orders from the hostage-taker one of the women called the police and
said the man would not set them free unless he was granted a political
asylum in the United States.

Officers of the Moscow police department for combating organized crime
arrive at the scene. While police officers held talks with the hostage-taker
commandos prepared to storm the post office building.

The man then changed his mind and gave himself up to the police releasing
the hostages. It transpired that the man, born 1983, had arrived in the
capital from the village of Zaklinie near St. Petersburg.

Investigation into the incident has been launched. The young man will have
to undergo psychiatric tests, police officials said.
