Turkish Man Takes U.S., Britain to Court After Russian Wife Divorces Him

A businessman from the Turkish city of Iskanderun has applied to the
European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), demanding the U.S. and Great Britain
pay him $1 billion in compensation each for his Russian wife divorcing him,
RIA Novosti reported.

The man, who does not want to reveal his name, claims that his wife suffered
severe mental stress due to the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, fearing Turkey
could intervene in the conflict, which resulted in her filing for divorce
and returning to Russia together with their child. The couple had lived
together for 10 years.

The lawsuit, described as the first of its kind, has been accepted by the
ECHR.

A number of Russian women marry Turkish men every year after holidaying at
the country's Mediterranean resorts, which are particularly popular among
Russians
