Where to begin learning about precolumbian Native Americans?

Hello!
I am a homeschooling dad. This year we will be studying U.S.
History. By far, the majority of the books I've found assume that
American History began in 1492 (Surprise!).
Well . . . . if the word "history" means "written account", that's
partly understandable. Few Native American written works prior to
1492 exist. Nevertheless, I want my kids (and myself) to learn about
what happened in North America, including the time before the
Europeans got here.
How to start? I have found books on Native American history and
culture, but unfortunately they are intended either for a college
audience (my kids are presently ages 11-17) or they are too
politically charged, or both.
Further, the Native Americans are not clones of each other. I do not
have the inclination to study a thousand people groups!
Pragmatically, I'll have to limit our studies to ten tribes or fewer.
I'm guessing that I can select a "representative" group from each of
several cultural/geographic areas (including Hawaii as well as the
North American mainland). Maybe that's a good idea; maybe not.
Any advice, please?
Thank you very much!
Ted Shoemaker
