No sympathy for illegal immigrants
By Jaclyn S. Dyrholm, Warrenton

I was disappointed to open up last weeks' edition of the
Democrat and read the article about the immigration protest
on U.S. 29.
Not only did it just barely scratch the surface on all the
complicated issues regarding illegal immigrants in this
country, but it was a very one-sided article. Does this
mean that the Democrat sympathizes with illegals, or that
not enough time and effort was given to truly present both
sides of this important issue in our country?
It was stated by one participant of the rally that "...we
have all come to this country for a better life...". And my
answer to that is "So." I have absolutely no sympathy for
them at all.
My husband, who moved to this country from Denmark almost
two years ago, is a college-educated, hard-working man who
came here to be with his wife and daughter (I am a U.S.
citizen and we met and married when I lived in Denmark).
However, unlike those who reside here illegally, he was not
allowed to even step foot into the United States without the
proper immigration paperwork. He was not allowed to seek
employment in this country as a software developer until he
had a government-issued work authorization.
He was not allowed to have a Virginia drivers license until
he obtained a Social Security Number, which did not happen
until he became a Permanent Resident this past November.
He did not become a Permanent Resident overnight. He did
not get a free ride into this country. Nor did the U.S.
government make it easy on us. It took nearly two years,
many trips to the Immigration Office in Arlington, a lot of
paperwork and almost $2,000 in immigration fees to get to
this point.
And we are not alone. Thousands of legal immigrants go
through this process every year.
These illegals want all the rights and privileges that we
legal residents enjoy, but they want to be given these
without earning it. They want their children to go to
school, yet they do not pay taxes. They want their children
to attend colleges and pay in-state tuition rates, yet they
do not pay taxes. They want to be given a drivers license,
yet they do not have a SSN.
They want to be able to live and work in the United States
without going through the legal process. I believe that
this is a disrespect to those who have come to this country
legally -- those who have come from Europe, Asia, India, the
Middle East, Africa, etc.
It has also been said by these illegals that all they want
is the chance to become U.S. citizens. Well, I have news
for them. They can! They have always had this chance, and
I will tell them how they can.
All they have to do is log onto the U.S. Citizenship and
Immigration Services website at http://www.uscis.gov or call
1-800-375-5283. From there they will be directed to the
documentation they need to fill out and what fees they need
to submit in order to begin the process.
Should they be considered criminals if they continue to
reside here illegally? YES! If my husband had tried to
work and live here illegally, he would have been treated as
such.
