Karpal lodges police report over Dr M remark
PENANG, May 23 ? DAP chairman Karpal Singh today lodged a police report over a
remark by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad about judges lobbying
him for various posts.

The act of lobbying is against the law according to the Anti-Corruption Act
1997, said Karpal who is Bukit Gelugor Member of Parliament after lodging the
report at the Penang contingent police headquarters.

"The Tun himself can face legal action under Section 17 of the Anti-Corruption
Act 1997 for not lodging a police report over the act of judges lobbying for
posts," he told reporters.

He said the police report he made was based on his views that police should
carry out a comprehensive investigation into Dr Mahathir's remark.

"It is important to identify the judges involved to protect honest judges whose
names were tarnished because of the action of irresponsible judges," he said.

On May 17, Dr Mahathir was reported to have said that he was prepared to be
charged in court so that he would have the opportunity to reveal many things the
judges did, including lobbying.

He made this remark in response to the findings of the Royal Commission of
Inquiry into the authenticity of a video clip showing lawyer Datuk V.K. Lingam
talking on the phone about judicial appointments.

The commission held there was evidence that Dr Mahathir, Lingam, tycoon Tan Sri
Vincent Tan, Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor and
former chief justices Tun Eusoff Chin and Tun Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim
were involved in a conspiracy to manipulate the appointment of judges.

Following this, the Cabinet has agreed with the commission's recommendation that
the Attorney-General's Chambers investigate allegations against the six. ?
