The 2nd Other Malaysia public lecture: Malaysia?s post-colonial politics has
been configured and determined by the logic of racial differences and
race-relations; yet it is important to note that the very word ?race? was only
introduced to the vocabulary of the peoples of Southeast Asia in the mid-19th
century. As Malaysia moves towards the future and the creation of a new Malaysia
with a new Malaysian politics that transcends racial differences, we need to
ask: How and why did racial difference come to dominate the political culture of
our nation-state? Looking at the introduction of the colonial census, the
practice of racialised colonial capitalism and the introduction of violent
hierarchies of racial difference, we hope to deconstruct the workings of
racialised politics in the past as well as in the Malaysia we know today. The
lecture is FREE and open to all. Venue: The Annexe, Central Market, Kuala Lumpur
