Religious officer faces graft probe

IPOH: The Anti-Corruption Agency has remanded a senior Perak Religious
Department officer for two days for allegedly accepting a RM4,000 bribe.

However, the 39-year-old suspect is expected to be produced before the Registrar
of the Sessions and magistrate's court again today as he was believed to have
engaged a lawyer to represent him.

The ACA is expected to apply for an extension of the remand to facilitate their
investigations.

The suspect was brought to the court at 9.30am yesterday. He appeared calm and
unruffled when produced before court registrar Wong Lok Hai 15 minutes later.

Earlier, it was reported that the officer was detained on Thursday noon for
allegedly accepting the money to turn a blind eye to a khalwat (close proximity)
case.

He is the second senior syariah officer to be arrested by the ACA this month.

On Sept 7, the ACA detained a senior Syariah Court judge here for allegedly
receiving a RM4,200 bribe to expedite a case involving a VIP.

He was remanded for four days and released on Sept 10 after posting RM10,000
bail at the ACA office here.

Both suspects are being investigated under Section 11(a) of the Anti-Corruption
Act 1997.

If convicted, they can be jailed for a minimum of 14 days or a maximum of 20
years, and fined five times the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

This happen all the time ..........infront of mosque they talk about
