Kuala Lumpur: Police have begun recording statements from Anti-Corruption Agency
(ACA) Director-General Datuk Zulkipli Mohd Noor in connection with the
allegations of corruption and abuse of power against him, CID Director Datuk
Christopher Wan Soo Kee said Friday.
He said the process of recording the statements and obtaining documents began
last Wednesday and was being conducted by a special team of 10 officers from
Bukit Aman and the Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent Headquarters that was set up
last Tuesday.
"We cannot reveal when the report will be completed. We cannot say how many
times we will meet up with him (Zulkipli) and the duration of each meeting to
record the statements.
"The important thing is that we have begun recording statements from Zulkipli,"
Wan, who is heading the team, said when contacted over developments in the
investigation on Zulkipli.
However, efforts to contact Zulkipli were not fruitful.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said on Thursday that police had
so far obtained statements from 21 people in connection with the case.
Former Sabah ACA Director, Mohamad Ramli Abdul Manan, had made several
allegations last year against Zulkipli, including that the latter was involved
in corruption and owned property and assets disproportionate to his known source
of income.
The media had also reported a statement by Mohamad Ramli that he had made a
report on corruption and abuse of power against several senior officers of the
agency, apart from Zulkipli.
Mohamad Ramli, 56, who retired last Dec 8, had said that the report against
Zulkipli was made in accordance with Section 107 of the Criminal Procedure Code
in July last year, which enabled the police to open an investigation.
The contract of service of Zulkipli, 56, as ACA Director-General has been
extended thrice and is due to end today (Saturday). - Bernama

Malaysian graft official dropped

Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi thanked Mr Zulkipli for a good job
The head of Malaysia's anti-corruption agency is to stand down amid allegations
of graft.
Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi announced that Zulkipli Mat Noor's contract,
which expires Saturday, will not be renewed.
Police are questioning Mr Zulkipli after a former senior colleague raised
questions about his business and property interests.
Mr Zulkipli, a former policeman, has denied the allegations.
Election speculation
Sacking people is not the Malaysian way.
Instead, a statement from the prime minister's office praised Mr Zulkipli and
expressed the highest gratitude for his efforts since he took up his post six
years ago.
Still, as of midnight Saturday, the head of Malaysia's anti-corruption agency
will have no job after six years holding the post.
Police officers started taking statements from him last week.
The former police officer will be asked about allegations of sexual misconduct
and how he was apparently able to amass interests in several businesses and buy
half a dozen properties on a civil servant's meagre salary.
The investigation was launched after the agency's former head in the state of
Sabah went public with his concerns.
The termination of Mr Zulkipli's contract will add to speculation that Malaysia
will face an early general election later this year.
The prime minister's last campaign against graft flared up just weeks before the
2004 polls and according to critics, quickly died down again afterwards.
