Far more important is for people to accept diversity as a basic part
of life. Unity becomes a natural follow through of such a mind set.
If we look for differences and highlight them and connect it to some
group interests then the diversity is actually been used for some
political or self-serving interests. When such manipulative tactics
are used often enough, those who may have no problem with diversity
will start to feel suspicious, uneasy, angry etc.
With the way our view of the world is shaped by the media and how such
media are often used for political purposes the sincerity of the
leaders in promoting peace through acceptance of diversity is very
important. The whole notion of tolerating diversity will never
promote peace. If everyone gets to walk in the shoes of another either
through the formal education process or just allowing kids to mix,
such acceptance is embraced and often all will benefit from it. Like a
chinese playing gasing or a malay playing the thabla(sp) and the
indian playing the gompang. We get to appreciate and enjoy the
richness that only diversity can bring about.
