Chinese hard drives
August 29, 2006
Most large disk drive manufacturers have manufacturing plants in China: Seagate;
Maxtor (before Seagate acquisition); Western Digital.
Who is to say that a Chinese disk drive company won't start up? It will probably
start out making components and gradually build up to making complete drive
assemblies. Seagate will probably be the hardest competitor to crack since it is
vertically integrated and the Maxtor plants will be integrated into Seagate's
orchestrated manufacturing operations.
But there may be excess plant which is sold off. As consolidation in the disk
drive business proceeds apace a Chinese concern may take an equity interest in a
troubled HDD suplier.
In five years time we may be buying Lenovo hard drives. Care to bet against it?
I wouldn't.

There are two Chinese companies that have been in the HDD business for a long
time. One is GS Magic and the other is ExcelStor (part of the Great Wall Company
holdings). Together they have less than two percent of the marketplace. Perhaps
you know something that you are not revealing Chris? Is Lenovo buying Hitachi
GST? Or some other combination in the works? Frankly, the rumors such as these
have been flying around for a long time. Anyone familiar with the HDD industry
fully expects more consolidation. In fact, anyone familiar with how industries
mature would expect it. is there something specific you wish you could tell us?

Storage matters to every business - they just don't always realise it.
