Taipei - Taiwan said Friday it will soon form an agency to hold talks with China
over opening of the island for holiday visits by Chinese tourists, despite
cross-strait tension.

The formation of the semi-official group would help speed up the necessary
processes for Chinese tourists to visit the island before the end of this year,
said Joseph Wu, head of the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), Taiwan's top China
policy planning body.

'The agency will be tentatively named Taiwan Strait Tourism Association (TSTA)
to represent the government in talks with China over the Chinese tourist
visiting issues,' Wu said in a news conference in Taipei.

He said TSTA is formed as a counterpart of China's Cross Strait Tourism Exchange
Association (CSTEA), which was established earlier in August by the
Beijing-based National Tourism Administration of China to deal with relevant
tourism departments of Taiwan in the absence of formal relations.

Hsu Sheng-wen, director of Taiwan Tourism Bureau, who will head TSTA, told
reporters at the same news conference the agency will be officially formed on
Sunday.

Taiwan, which has remained a rival of China, has restricted Chinese visitors
from visiting the island since the two sides split at the end of a civil war in
1949.
