Indonesia To Replace Malaysia As No 1 CPO Producer In 2007

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 23 (Bernama) -- Land limitation in Malaysia has hindered
further expansion for cultivation of palm oil cultivation and Indonesia, with
plenty of land available for the crop, is set to surpass Malaysia as the largest
producer of crude palm oil (CPO) in 2007.

"The expansion in CPO output will mainly be in green field developments in
Indonesia," said Patrick Vizzone, regional head (Asia), strategic advisory and
research food and agribusiness of Rabobank International in Hong Kong.

In a media briefing here Wednesday, Vizzone said Indonesia planned to open 6.5
million hectares for developing biofuels crops, most likely palm oil.

He said for the biodiesel projects, 70 per cent of the cost comprised feed
stock, 20 per cent processing and 10 per cent distribution.

"Feed stock prices are critical to overall costs for palm oil producers looking
to migrate down the value chain," he said.

He said those venturing into biodiesel faced supply risk, end-market risk which
are the implementation of protectionist measures, technical risk, pricing risk
and sustainability risk.
