Re: Police 'tudung' ruling sexist, racist

Because the Singaporean law forces people to go against their religion.
The Malaysian police regulation doesn't. You can look at medieval
Europeans or Jews at the time of Jesus and see that they wore a tudung.
You can call it what you like but the reality is it looks the same. I
stand by the argument that there is nothing intrinsically religious
about the tudung, the requirement in Islam is to cover all parts of the
body except hands and face, and part of achieving that is wearing a
tudung, but that doesn't make it a religious symbol like a cross. By
the way, I didn't say wearing a cross was a requirement for Christians,
but that is worn as a symbol of Christianity. The tudung should not be
worn by Muslims as a badge of Islamic identity but a requirement to
fulfil modesty codes.

I'm not a big fan of uniforms full stop actually, but obviously a
parade is the kind of thing where uniformity is expected. Whether it's
wise to insist on this in a multiracial country is questionable, but I
don't see it as forcing people to become a Muslim.

As far as Sikhs go, I think they should be allowed to wear turbans.

One other thing, last I saw, non-Muslims are perfectly welcome to join
the army and there are plenty of them there? Maybe not as many as
Malays, but do you have any evidence that this is because they are
discriminated against. Perhaps fewer apply? I'm not talking about the
Malay Regiment of course, which was set up by the British for Malays if
I recall correctly.
