The question is though, is it any less racist for Singapore to ban
wearing tudung in public schools? Going to school is a fundamental
human right not a job one can choose and unless Singapore is prepared
to refund the tax Malay parents pay for the public education system
they shouldn't interfere with their right to practice their religion.
Actually I don't see tudung as necessarily a religious symbol. You can
see Queen Elizabeth on Princess Anne wearing one. Yes it is a religious
requirement for Muslim women [says most scholars] but it's not
analogous to a cross which would only be worn by a Christian. If the
policewomen have to wear it all the time that is a different case, but
in parades things are usually concerned with uniformity. Calling it
'Dhimmitude' is just silly - it's not a serious imposition and actually
real 'Dhimmitude' would involve making them wear something different
not something the same. It's not AGAINST Christian or Buddhist
religions to cover the hair, so I can't see how anyone's rights are
being offended. My position would be totally different if wearing a
tudung violated the religous rules of the minority.
