At least 100 Indonesian schools needed in Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur (ANTARA News) - Visiting Vice President Jusuf Kalla said he
estimated that at least 100 schools are needed in Malaysia for around
36,000 Indonesian children in the country.
"There are around 36,000 Indonesian children in Malaysia. If a school can
accommodate 300 to 500 students, then we will need about 100 schools," the
Indonesian vice president told newsmen here on Thursday.
Kalla said a number of Indonesian teachers would be sent to Malaysia in the
new education year which starts in June and July.
According to Kalla, an agreement has been reached in his meeting with
Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi that the Indonesian schools
in Malaysia can be opened as soon as possible.
Asked if the agreement could be accepted by Malaysian educational law, the
vice president said education was a matter of human rights.
"Education is no longer a matter of law but it is more than that. Since
education is an authentic human right, it should be implemented under any
circumstances and anywhere," Kalla noted.
However, he added that the solution should be borne jointly by the two
countries with the Malaysian government providing the school buildings and
the Indonesian government providing the teachers and operational funds.
On the occasion, Kalla instructed the Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia
Rusdihardjo to immediately hold technical discussions with Malaysian
authorities and to observe the locations in Sabah and Serawak states where
many Indonesian children are not going to school. (*)
