Debating Immigration

Recent news story http://bernama.com.my/bernama/v3/news.php?id=188883
reported that only 135 of 2854 applications for Malaysian citizenship
were approved. Is it any wonder when it is so difficult even to get
permanent residence.

In a globalised world, it is bizarre and self-defeating that Malaysia
is one of the most difficult countries in the world to legally migrate
to on a permanent basis. For Malaysians married to foreigners - an
increasing phenomena - by far the easiest option is to migrate to the
non-Malaysian spouse's country, or a third country. This is
particularly the case if the Malaysian spouse is a woman.

The irony is of course, that the citizens Malaysia is losing are its
most educated and those with the highest potential to develop the
country. Other countries [US, Australia, UK, Singapore] import talented
people because they recognise the value professional people bring to
their countries and their economies. Malaysia instead forces male
professionals who are married to Malaysians to get by on temporary work
permits and takes a minimum of 5 years and a huge amount of
bureaucratic nonsense to offer them permanent status, often much
longer. In the meantime, many couples get sick of this and Malaysia
loses two educated, professional people to another country when they
leave, plus the children who are probably more likely to succeed in
life, being born of educated parents. If the couple migrate to a
Western country, the Malaysian will usually be awarded permanent
residence within a couple of years and once they get used to the new
environment they won't consider coming back.

Singapore, a tiny island with little room for more people, makes it
easy for spouses to settle in Singapore and grants them residence
quickly, particularly if they are educated. Their economy benefits and
the kids of the relationship are potentially available to serve
Singapore in the future. Shouldn't Malaysia be doing the same?
