That's true. When do you see Chinese tourists carrying handful of shopping bags walking around. They don't seems to be buying anything at all. All window shopping only and comparing prices here with those in China. Almost always end up saying our prices here is way to high than theirs in China. That's for comsumer products like cameras, watches, electronic items, etc.
What they say is totally 100% true. Their branded fakes are even higher quality than our fakes, and are way cheaper too. Even fakes like Rolex, or clothing like Versace, they got grades one you know, like this is Grade 1 Versace fake shirt, and that is Grade 3 Versace fake shirt, and all have different price.
As for souvenirs, I've no idea. Anyone got any info?
My friend who operates a small souvenir and traditional food ( cakes, biscuits, etc... ) shop in Gurney Plaza says that the largest foreign customer base is Singaporeans, who are very good customers, partly because his brand is over 90 years old, and the SIngaporeans recognize the brand. His sales to China, Middle East, etc... customers are quite fairly divided and about the same in terms of volumes. SOme of his biscuits got the Halal certificate, and so he is able to make sales to this middle east market.
What I know for sure is that Chinese tourists don't go to Kek Lok Si temple for a visit, as a part of the tour, for all operators. Some offer this trip, some don't. Like I mean, they want to see a temple here ah ?? You watch kung fu movies on Astro ?? All those temples in the movies, serials, they are all in one way or another, real sites. My friend's wife who sells gift items in the walkway leading up to the Kek Lok Si steps, she says, her most customers are Singaporeans and locals from out of Penang city people.
