Nor Mohamed to lead roadshow team
LONDON: Second Finance Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop will lead a
Malaysian delegation to the two-day 2nd Asean Finance Ministers' Roadshow
beginning here today.
At the roadshow, Nor Mohamed is expected to chair a panel discussion.
Panel members include Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Yusli Mohamed
Yusoff and FTSE Group director Carl Beckley.
The roadshow will mark a historical development for Asean's capital market
fraternity with the launch of the much-awaited Asean Index, which has two
indices - the FTSE Asean Benchmark Index and FTSE Asean 40 Index. The
launch is scheduled for Wednesday.
The indices, which will be launched jointly by the Finance Ministers of
Asean, will initially feature the region's top counters from the stock
markets of Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Singapore.
Tan Sri Mohamed Yakcop
The Index Committee chose FTSE Group after considering proposals by the
latter, Dow Jones Indices, MSCI and S&P.
The launch of the index is the first collaborated effort by the five
regional bourses aimed at broadening the exposure of Asean companies to
foreign investors.
The indices will also aim to enhance efforts to facilitate investments into
Asean companies and act as a benchmark for region's performance.
The launch of the index is expected to provide an impetus for the
development or related products such as Asean tracker funds, derivative
products and exchange traded funds.
The FTSE Asean Benchmark Index will comprise 180 stocks from the five
markets. Other markets, such as Vietnam, may be added over time.
This index will represent the performance of the Asean region's markets. It
represents companies that are currently constituents of the FTSE Global All
Cap Large/Mid Index.
The FTSE Asean 40 Index will comprise 40 constituents of the FTSE Asean
Benchmark Index. ? Bernama
