Share the good and bad times?

GEORGE TOWN, PENANG, Thurs.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today said that the Government is doing
its best to introduce more steps to alleviate people?s burdens following
rising prices.
The Prime Minister said people should understand the Government?s present
position and not "accuse it of being mean".

Calling on the people to share in the "good and bad times" with the
Government, he said: "The Government is not trying to put a stop to the
subsidies given to the people.

"We are just reducing the amount. Please understand the present position.

"Let us together rejoice in the good times and share in the bad times. The
people have their own hardships, the Government too has hardships."

He was speaking before handing out offer letters to some of the 330
successful applicants of the Equine Group Studio S housing project in
Bandar Cassia, Batu Kawan at a college here today.

Present were Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, Penang Development
Corporation general manager Datuk Ahmad Fuad Ismail and Equine Group
executive chairman Datuk Patrick Lim.

Yesterday, the Government announced several measures to address present
price hikes. They included no hikes in petrol, diesel and gas prices until
the end of the month, no toll hike until 2007, a 25 per cent reduction in
road tax for all commercial vehicles and more welfare aid for senior
citizens, the underprivileged and orphans.

Abdullah also asked for co-operation from all businesses to stop raising
the prices of their goods unnecessarily.

"Let us all work together. Overall, I think we are still better off than
some countries," he added.

Earlier, Abdullah praised the Equine Group for introducing an affordable
housing scheme to address the housing needs of the lower-income group.
