M'sia's Automotive Industry Still Under MITI, Says Rafidah
By Jackson Sawatan August 29, 2005 21:03 PM
SINGAPORE, Aug 29 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of International Trade and
Industry (MITI) is still in charge of Malaysia's automotive industry, says
its minister Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz Monday.
She said that contrary to reports in some newspapers, the jurisdiction has
not been taken away from the ministry.
"Just to reiterate, the (issuance of) Approved Permits (APs), the
automotive
industry is still in my ministry, as it has always been," Rafidah told a
news conference on the sidelines of the seminar on business opportunity in
Malaysia.
She said she needed to make that clarification "just to dispel the notion
that AP is taken away (from the ministry)... no, no such thing".
"It is still with us, no change at all from before," she added.
The difference now is that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi
is chairing a meeting of four ministers -- the International Trade and
Industry, Transport, the minister in charge of the Economic Planning Unit
and the Second Finance Minister -- to take a comprehensive look at the
automotive industry, according to Rafidah.
"The reason is that the industry is not only involves the industry per se
but also the manufacture of components and parts, tax incentives and so on
which the Finance Ministry is to look at," she said.
"And then it also involves technical aspects, new technologies such as
emission technology and so on which will have to be looked at by the
Transport Ministry. So it's not just MITI's point of view. So the Prime
Minister chair the meeting and we have had our first meeting already," she
added.
Rafidah said that the ministries were also looking seriously at any flaws
in
the issuance of APs.
"People who violate the conditions that we placed upon them would be taken
to task. We already stopped issuing permits to those that we find fault
with, who abused the facility," she said. -- BERNAMA
