Two Indonesian men detained over bomb hoax in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR (DPA): Malaysian police have detained two Indonesian men alleged to be responsible for making false alerts over several bomb scares in the northern Penang state, local reports said on Thursday.

The two 25-year-old men were detained on Wednesday at the airport as they were about to depart for their home in the Indonesian district of Medan, said state police chief Christopher Wan.

Wan said police had received six warnings via short text messaging (SMS) from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning, alleging that bombs had been placed in several popular shopping and tourist locations around the state.

Hundreds of shoppers and workers were evacuated out of two busy shopping malls in the state late Wednesday after news of the bomb threat had spread, the Star daily reported.

A bomb detection squad was sent to both locations as police diverted traffic, before the area was cleared to be safe after about an hour, he said.

The two suspects would be held in remand for several days to assist in investigations. (*
