avo was a sub-division, a shock troop of the avh

the sd, as they were supervising detention and deportation camps as

many country lads and other disadvantaged were conscripted into the
avo, they had no choice at all

as a matter of fact the avo belonged to the interior ministry so the
border guards were avo-s as well

the border guards were the zold (green) avo, and the ones that
belonged to avh were the so called kek (blue) avo, not only they
belonged to the same ministry, but they also wore the same uniform,
the only difference was the colour of the parolin

many of the first refugees that arrived in the west in '56,
were actually avo-s

City" near Györ and Tatabanya).

"titkos rendorseg" simply means non-uniformed cops,
but to put it into perspective, in hungary much like in other
east-block countries even the uniformed ones were trusted tools of the
political apparatus

put this on a sliding scale now to get an accurate picture

the only notable exemption was the former worker and anti-fascist
fighter kopacsy sandor, who as the police chief of budapest in '56

he declared that hungarian police men won't shoot at hungarian workers

he suffered for many years in jail for that, and finally when he as an
older man arrived in a free world, he had to work as a janitor for his
daily bread
