I'm still not sure how and what to evolve to next.
I find that Thunderbird sucks too, which is why I am still using trn,
but the other serious alternative is Outlook. But outlook fails on
many scores, one of them is that it stores mail in some irreversible
proprietary format.
Maybe there is a way, technically speaking, we can setup a web something
or another that serves two purposes:
- Easy web posting and reading access
- Gateway <both ways> to SCL
For the lack of better name, let me call it SCL web gateway.
Let me take as a starting point slahsdot. slahdot has a nice forum step.
It is moderated. See:
http://slashdot.org/
What we need is to marry something like slahsdot to SCL through a gateway
that takes what is posted to one and post it to the other with some controls
(blacklist, white list, and moderating everybody else).
Slashdot is available freely, see:
http://www.slashcode.com/
So what's left is to write the gateway scripts and a posting account on a
friendly news server.
The whole thing could be financed initially with contribution and as it picks
up traffic with with Google ads, see slashdot left column, at the bottom.
The advantages of such a setup are:
- everything posted on the web gateway is retained forever on scl
- easy web access
- tighten security controls so that only people with valid email addresses
can post and can have their email address hidden from public display.
The disadvantages are:
- time: I for one don't have the free time and dedication to pull something like
this. Which leads to the second point.
- Team effort: from past experience any project that does not have a large support
base is doomed.
- Some initial investment needed.
I just pulled slashdot for example because I am familiar with it. Anything else
that does the same job and is freely distributed works.
So, that's one evolution alternative. Others?
