Lebanon Civil War May Explode

Beirut, Sep 21 (Prensa Latina) The threat of a civil war outbreak in
Lebanon is a fact if the president is not elected by absolute majority,
warned General Michel Aun, leader of the opposition and presidential
candidate.

Michel Aun said that if September 25 voting in Parliament is by absolute
majority, then there will be a civil war because "the opposition will
hinder the election of the new president by that many votes."

Sharq al Awsat daily quoted the general as saying that all means of
resistance will be used to defeat and send the president to jail.

The leader of the opposition predicted that it is unlikely that
legislators are in conditions to elect the new president, due to the
lack of consensus among the majority and the opposition.

Well, Michel Aoun knows that March
14 will not want to elect him. Some among their ranks view him as an
opportunist whether his partisans agree or not. They think he sold
the positions that were similar to March 14th's before landing in
Lebanon and jettisoned them in order to try to become president. The
secular, Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish once wrote 3arshak Na3shak,
or your throne is your coffin. Essentially, it is probably a play of
the idea of Jesus saying that greed takes people to hell. Aoun's
greed is part of what is destroying Lebanon. Maybe Aoun doesn't care,
but there are so many Lebanese born into his community who want a
normal life, to raise their children, and this instability is not
making it easy at all, and he must face that March 14th simply does
not want him, and he can't get elected without their approval. How
about someone his community actually trusts to lead the country, a
moderate.
He is certainly not a moderate since he flip-flopped on his
positions. I knew so many Aounists in the past, and I am sure many
of them are not too happy about the changes he made. I would rather
see a new parliamentary election, so the will of the people can
speak. We do know more Christians appear to be against Aoun. Their
sons are being killed by assassins! What does he expect? In the last
election, an Aounist only won because the overwhelming support from
the Tashnak people. Only a small majority of Orthodox voted for
Aoun, and that is possibly going to shift more away from him. And the
Maronites clearly were against him in the election. If Lebanon goes
into a civil war, well just as Aoun helped destroy Beirut in 1990 in
the conflict with Geagea, he may contribute to another destruction.
Geagea, this time, is allied with Walid Jumblatt and the LF and PSP
are in an alliance, Geagea is allied to Saad Hariri. Geagea is not
doing it to become president. He is not interested in that. He is
defending his community. He has not asked for the presidency.
Aoun has.
