I have been reading SCL group over the last two years in order to
understand why lebanon is NOT doing the most fundamental thing of
collecting the arms from the militias.
Maybe because the Lebanese know that they cannot trust the Israelis. Maybe
because the Lebanese know from bitter experience that in times of trouble,
there is no one else they can look to for help. Maybe because the constant
violation of Lebanese airspace and territorial waters by Israel served as
reminders of the threat that is always there.
Usually it ended with the
Lebanese can't do anything about it.
The last provocation from Hozbullah were simply too much. There is not
a single nation in the world that can ignore something like that,
specially when the provocator can repeat the action as he likes and
receives political gain from the act.
And there is not a single other nation in the world that with modern
sophisticated weapons that will target civilians as the Israelis
consistently do - and then have the audacity to declare that they do their
best to avoid civilian casualties. There is also not a single other nation
in the world that constantly uses collective punishment against civilians as
a default defence/offence policy.
If there was at least internal voice calling Hizbullah to stop fire
and return the hostages, then Israel would have let this process to
take place instead of increasing pressure. But this didn't happen. The
only response we hear from here is from this guy that is doing all he
can to show we aren't determined and that we can be defeated. Israel
response is one that anyone who can see should have expected. Lebanese
govt. not only let Hizbullah collect his arsenal, but also contributed
logistically and operationally during the last days.
You are only kidding yourself. The whole world knows how trigger happy
Israel is. Even their staunchest allies know this, but still choose to
ignore the fact and go on funding and equipping their war machine and
protecting Israel with a UN Veto. Besides the 5 permanent members on the
Security Council and Israel, no other country in the world is shielded from
international law by the use of the veto.
Had HizbAllah not captured the SOLDIERS, Israel would sooner or later had
made up some other reason to attack Lebanon anyway. What is going on today
is not simply a reaction, it is the execution of plans long set out by
Israel (most probably with an approving "nod" or more from the USA).
I don't understand why there are people in Lebanon that expects the
international community to stop Israel. I don't understand why do they
only face now the meaming of their acts.
Because what Israel is doing to Lebanon is disproportionate, it is bound to
create militants, it is bound to silence the moderates, it is Wrong, it is
Illegal, it is BARBARIC. These above are just a few reasons why the
Lebanese might be forgiven for expecting the international to stand up and
try to stop the killing and devastation.
But never mind all of that. While Israel specialises in devastation and
destruction, Lebanon specialises in construction and reconstruction. Israel
specialises in killing, Lebanon specialises in living. Lebanon may be
closed for the summer, but we will be back bigger and better and brighter
and more welcoming than Israel ever can be. And you know in your heart of
hearts that it is true.

If the current situation in Lebanon does not convenience all Lebanese of
all
denomination that we cannot rely on, nor trust our western "friends",
then
nothing ever will.
For years now they have been falling over themselves to express their
longing for our "freedom" and our "independence". While pushing for
revolution and internal strife in Lebanon, they had been clambering to
declare that they were there waiting in the wings to help us should we
need
them. Their mouths had been writing cheques that they had no intension
to
ever honour.
And where are those big men and women of honour today? Where are those
great guardians of democracies and independence today while the children
of
Lebanon get slaughtered in their homes? Where are they today when even
the
basic infrastructure needed for survival are blow to bits? Where are
they
as our Country is savaged WITH THE WEAPONS THAT THEY BUILT AND THE
WEAPONS
THAT THEY PAID FOR and most probably weapons that are guided to our
civilians with the aid of images and data from their own spy satellites.
Where are those leaders of the self proclaimed "civilised" world when our
civilians are being attacked with barbaric ferocity? WHERE ARE THEY
TODAY?
We are not asking for weapons to defend ourselves, we are not asking for
them to send their soldiers to die for us, all we are asking for is for
them
to use their considerable influence to bring about a ceasefire for our
CIVILIANS. Alas, even this is too much to ask off our "friends". After
all, they would not want anything as insignificant as the lives of
Lebanese
children to interrupt them as they greedily stuff their bellies with
caviar
and Champaign at the G8 summit in Saint Petersburg.
As always, they are waiting until it is too late. They are waiting to
deliver their smartly worded hypocritical eulogies at our funerals. They
are waiting until everything we have built over the years is destroyed,
so
that they can come along and "offer" us reconstruction loans that will
guarantee them an income from interest payments for decades to come.
Oh what wonderful "friends" we have in the west!!
As for our Arab "brothers" .... that I'll leave for another post.
