Raad: Government should refuse resolution 1680 not applauding it, as some
minor amateurs doing

Monday, May 22, 2006 - 12:39 PM [Kods Time]

The head of the Loyalty to the Resistance parliamentary bloc demanded the
government refuse UN resolution 1680, instead of applauding it, as some
"minor amateurs" are doing. During a celebration for the Resistance and
Liberation holiday, Raad asked the government, how it would deal with a UN
Security Council resolution that encourages Lebanon to have peace with
Israel.

Raad said "Why are ties with Syria strained? Because some wanted to decrease
the level of enmity towards Israel, so they embodied Syria as the new enemy.
Israel is not the enemy now, but Syria is. And in this atmosphere, positions
and statements are made and tension mounts in the country. Every time we
make a step forward, and we agree at the round table to settle relations
with Syria, the February 14 team seeks to disturb the atmosphere and drive
in the element of foreign interference, so as not to fix ties. We frankly
and clearly accuse the February 14 powers of straining ties between Lebanon
and Syria."

For his part, Lebanese MP Ali Hasan Khalil responded to allegations that UN
resolution 1680 was founded on the results of the Lebanese National
Dialogue. Khalil added that some are pretending to have forgotten who was
behind this resolution, and reminded that the conferees at the negotiating
table have also agreed to demand Israel withdraw from the occupied Shebaa
Farms and confirmed Lebanon's right to resist until its occupied lands and
detainees are liberated.
