There's a mismatch between the Lebanese Diaspora's perception of what
must be done in Lebanon, and Lebanon's reality. The street is not
disillusioned or misguided (as we like think), at the same time, the
street is not completely rational. Resuming dialog with Amal is
pointless. Amal does not guide the Shiite street, Hezballah does. The
old 'majority' (March 14 + Hezballah) is now the new 'minority', and
the old minority (Aoun) is now the new majority (Aoun + Hezballah).
The country could have easily slipped into war yesterday, and what you
do not see on LBC or read about in AnNahar, is the massive
'precautionary' military presence around the Parliament. These were not
your standard draftees, smoking cigarettes and picking up girls, they
were hard core special forces, finger on the trigger, and a round in
the firing chamber. Despite the unuseasonal heat, I felt cold sweat
dripping down my back as I walked in front of the AnNahar building.
