I "believe" a more momumental question is..."Is Laos ready to be truly
"self-governed"? In other words, is Laos ready to charter her own
direction and abandon the "special frienship" without fearing threats
from Vietnam? We all know that the LPDR is run by a a bunch of thugs
and sub-servants like Thanouxay claiming Laos has achieved this and
that...etc. Fact of the matter is these people lives hinged on a thin
string and their lives can be taken away a moment w/out notice by men
from Hanoi. So your question..."is Laos ready for democracy?". The
answer is NO!

Jim,
The political lanscape in the region will change to more democratic
society. Vietnam will become a democratic nation in the next 10-20
years, even China. Here is my personal observation.
1. The ASEAN Charter will help serve as a base to create the ASEAN
democratic society.
The current international attention is at Burma or Myenma right now.
Once the issue of Burma has been resolved. The attention will be on
Vietnam and other. The internal democratic force in Vietnam has been
growing strengt inside Vietnam.
The territory conflict with China have pushed Vietnam to forge a
closed relationship with the US and Japan in recent years. Today, the
US is number ONE Vietnam trading partner.
2. The China-Taiwan unification
China already recognized the Komingtung Party in Taiwan and had
welcomed a high profile visit of the Party Chairman to visit China.
The new chairman of the Komingtung Party had visit India to be
familiared with India democratic model and system. Taiwan insists
that China Must be a democratic and multi-party system if China wants
Taiwan to reunited with China.
3. North and South Koreas' unification
When this happens, the unified Korea will be a democratic nation
and South korea would absord the North and help modernize it as it
happened with East and West Germany.
In conclusion, when all these happening, the less of the smaller-
undemocratic countries will be forced to change and adopt the new
reality.
Lao people need to be ready for this wave of changes to avoid the
unrest and killings.
