Lao President departs for China

The Secretary General of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and
President of the Lao PDR, Choummaly Sayasone, led a high-ranking
delegation on a state visit to China yesterday.

The visit from June 26 to July 2 is being made in response to an
invitation from the Secretary General of the Communist Party of China,
also President of China, Hu Jintao. During the visit, Mr Choummaly and
his delegation will meet their Chinese counterparts, when the sides
will sign agreements to strengthen their bilateral cooperation.

Accompanying Mr Choummaly and his wife are top Party and government
officials including Dr Thoungloun Sisoulith, Party Politburo member,
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Mr Somsavat
Lengsavad, Party Politburo member, Deputy Prime Minister and Standing
Government Member.

Other members of this high-ranking delegation are:

Mr Bounthong Chitmany, member of the Party Central Committee and Chief
of the Party Organisation Committee;

Mr Chansy Phosikham, member of the Party Central Committee and Minister
of Finance;

Mr Soulivong Daravong, member of the Party Central Committee and
President of the Committee for Planning and Investment;

Mr Soubanh Srithirath, member of the Party Central Committee and
Minister to the President’s Office;

Mr Khampheuy Panemalaithong, member of the Party Central Committee and
Head of the cabinet of the Party Central Committee;

Dr Nam Vinhaket, member of the Party Central Committee and Minister of
Industry and Commerce;

and the Lao Ambassador to China, Mr Vichit Sindavong.

China is the second country that Mr Choummaly has visited since his
assumption of the posts of Party Secretary General and President of the
Republic. Last week, Mr Choummaly and high ranking officials from Laos
visited Vietnam from June 19-22.
