FedEx says bullets to US embassy in Cambodia mislabeled
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2006-06-24 13:39
The shipment of 140,000 bullets, delivered to the U.S. Embassy in
Cambodia earlier this month, appeared to have been mislabeled in the
United States before being tendered to FedEx, the company said in a
statement on Friday.
FedEx made the statement in response to a Thai Airways statement on
Wednesday, which claimed that the cartons it transported to the U.S.
Embassy last week were carried by FedEx from New York to Bangkok.
FedEx said it has been working to investigate the facts behind the
delivery of the shipment.
"FedEx carried a shipment from the United States to Bangkok, on an
airport-to-airport basis, in accordance with the instructions on the
shipping documents," it said. "The shipment was tendered to Thai
Airways, which transported the shipment to Cambodia, whereupon it was
delivered to the U.S. Embassy."
The U.S. Embassy received misdirected shipment of 140,000 bullets on
June 7, the embassy statement said on Monday, adding the initial
investigation revealed that the shipment was mislabeled by the carrier,
Thai Airlines.
The airline stated the cargo should have been four artwork pieces,
weighing 460 kilograms. It transferred the shipment to Phnom Penh on
TG698 on June 7. The mislabeling was due to a shipping company in the
United States, it said.
"Thai Airways opened an urgent investigation and found that these
problems occurred as the warehouse in Newark [New York] airport
mislabeled the cases containing the artwork," the Thai national carrier
said in its statement.
Apparently the bullets were supposed to be delivered to four different
countries in accordance with FedEx's bill, the airline added.
The airline said the U.S. authorities issued a license export for the
cargo, saying that the cargo was "non-hazardous bullet
projectiles/Slugs for hunting, testing and sport purposes," according
to The Cambodia Daily.
U.S. Embassy spokesman Jeff Daigle repeated his previous assurance
Wednesday that neither the U.S. nor the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh had
any involvement with the consignment of the bullets.
