Laos expands medical network

Vientiane, Oct. 23 (VNA) – Laos has expanded its medical network over
the past year to 710 hospitals and clinics in all the 18 cities and
provinces, a year-on-year increase of 64 hospitals and clinics.
According to a report by the Lao Government on the implementation of
the national socio-economic plan in the 2004-05 fiscal year, the
country now has more than 1,000 medical doctors and practitioners and
tens of thousands of volunteers involved in providing medical
examinations and treatment for the Lao people. There are now nearly 260
private hospitals and clinics and around 2,000 drug stores in Laos.
About 64 percent of the Lao population have access to safe water and 45
percent of households have septic tanks, the report said.
Last year, the country’s first heart surgery centre was put into
operation at a clinic in Vientiane capital city.-Enditem
