The "Gwangju People's Uprising" is not over yet!

1980 May Gwangju! 2006 May Pyeongtaek!

On May 4th 2006, South Korean government sent in over 15,000 military/riot
police to the villages of Daechuri to end people's peaceful protest against
U.S. base expansion in Pyeongtaek. Over 500 local farmers and activists were
injured and 524 were arrested.

The military brutally attacked these farmers in a fashion similar to what
they did on May 18th 1980 against the peaceful demonstrators calling for
democracy.

As part of its global military strategy, the U.S. military in SK imposed a
base enlargement plan on Pyeongtaek. In return, subservient SK government
utilized various coercion tactics against the farmers who wish to remain in
their farmlands. The rice farmers and their families have been protesting
for the past four years against the expansion of the US military base.

You are invited to discuss the legacy of the Gwangju people's uprising, the
latest anti-U.S. base expansion struggle in South Korea!
