Chan Wook Park in General and Oldboy in Particular

I can't believe that Chan Wook Park isn't a household name like
Tarantino and John Wu. Chan Wook Park's vision exceeds both men by a
large margin. CWP isn't just interested in action and gore- he's
interested in the extremes of human behavior.
Admitted, I haven't seen all his films; but after seeing Oldboy a few
months ago, I can't believe this guy isn't a canonical figure in action.
Perhaps it's because he isn't satisfied with an ordinary genre movie.
Oldboy is supposedly about revenge, but in most revenge films, the worst
thing that can happen to the object of revenge is for him/her/it to
die/be destroyed. In Oldboy, revenge is a form of suicide. Instead of
killing as its locus, sculpting becomes its focus. By fundamentally
changing the character of a person, as well as the relationships that
person holds dearest, the vengence becomes greater- more unique than
through mere murder.
Well, I ought not to talk more about this film unless there are a few
people here who've actually seen it. I wouldn't want to spoil such a
great film for those who haven't seen it yet.
