Yup, and what you have cited below are posts in which Jews are discussing
ways that we can *defend* ourselves against the Christian right in its
relentless attacks on Jewish doctrine. One of the posts cited below
addresses, at length, our anger and annoyance that the Christian right
incorrectly use the expression "Judeo-Christian" (again with respect to
political issues) to suggest that Judaism is linked to Christianity as part
and parcel of a single school of thought. The other post discusses the issue
of Christians' attacks on the torah and perverting the meaning of the torah
in order to trash Judaism [kind of like what you and Randy do every day of
the week on alt.messianic]. It would be interesting to see if you could find
someone who initiates daily posts to SCJM whose sole purpose in posting is
to trash Christianity (sort of like what Randy does to Judaism on
alt.messy).
I suspect the SCJM moderators would reject the majority of Randy's posts for
simple incoherence, if not for any other reason.
Best regards,
---Cindy S.

Subject: Jews, Christian Fundamentalists, and the Meaning of the Torah
This is an American-centric post and is not really applicable to
other countries.
Most people familiar with American politics at the present
should
know that the Christian Fundamentalists are a powerful faction in
American politics. They are fond of using passaeges from the Bible to
justify their positions. More often than not, they use passages from
the Torah to justify their positions. I can't even remember one of them
quoting the New Testament to justify something they believe in.
I see this as a problem for the Jews. The more Christian
fundamentalists quote from the Torah, or at least their imperfect
translation of it, the more the Torah is mocked and trashed and
desecrated. Yet, apparently the entire Jewish community is content to
let the opponents of the Christian fundamentalists portray the Torah as
something dark and forboding and disgusting. I can't recall any Rabbi,
Reform, Conservative, or Orthodox or a Jewish leader, get up and say
"this what we Jews interpret this particular passage from OUR Torah to
mean." Instead our leadership sits back while our holy book is trashed
before our eyes. Meanwhile, nobody every makes fun of or mocks the New
Testament or calls it disgusting.
We are we Jews not trying to express our opinions over the
meanings of the Torah passages quoted by the Christian fundamentalits
to justify their positions? Why are we letting the Torah and the rest
of the Tanakh being portrayed as dark and evil book by the opponents of
the Christian fundamentalists?

Subject: Jews, Christian fundamentalists, and the Tanakh/Old Testament
As I undetstand it, one of the key aspects of Christian
fundamentalism is the emphasis it places on the Tanakh/Old Testament
compared to other Protestant groups. However, any Jew knows that their
emphasis on the Tanakh/Old Testament is very selective. They use it to
justify homophobia, but as far as I know none of them keep kosher or
observe the laws concerning dress, most of their men are clean shaven.
Still, what they are known for is their emphasis on the Tanakh/Old
Testament.
I don't really think this is good for the Jews. Thanks to Christian
fundamentalists, the Tanakh is being dragged through the mud and this
means Judaism is being dragged through the mud.. Rather than being seen
as a source of good, solid ethical and moral teachings, its seen as a
dark book of hatred and bigotry. In this line of argument, since the
Tanakh/Old Testament is seen as disgusting, it means that the religions
associated with it, Judaism and Christian fundamentalism are seen as
vile rellgions. Meanwhile, the New Testament and Qu'ran and the Pali
Canon, the Buddhist scriptures, and any other holy book are seen as all
sweetness and enlightenment along with their assoicated religions.
I think it is important for Jews to separate themselves from the
Christian fundamentalists as any association with them can not be good
for us. We will be associated with the bigotry and hatred of the
Christian fundamentalists even though we have nothing to do with it.

Subject: The phrase Judeo-Christian
The phrase Judeo-Christian is really beggining to get on my
nerves.
Its pretty meaningless since there is nearly or even absolutely nothing
Judeo in Judeo-Christian. Worst, it links Jews with the foolishness of
the Christian fundamentalists. Many people who oppose creationism
taught in schools or the Ten Commandments posted on government
buildings use the phrase Judeo-Christian to suggest that Jews are
behind these actions as well or at least okay with them. They don't
realize that most Jews oppose these actions or even that Jews number
the Ten Commandments differently than Protestants and Catholics.
Part of the problem lies in the Jewish community though, both
Orthodox and non-Orthodox Jews. Orthodox Jews are not likely to argue
with people who use the term Judeo-Christian because they feel that
Gentiles never listened in the past and are not likely to listen in the
future. Non-Orthodox Jews are likely to embrace the phrase to stress
that which unites rather than divides. Jews need to speak up more on
how utterly stupid and meaningless and even insulting the phrase
Judeo-Christian is.
