Although I believe some don't think the song is necessarily 100%
doctrinally sound.
I don't know who those "some" might be. But their complaint is not
about the fact that angels accompany one home from shul. Rather it
might be the propriety of having a song in their honor.
Right, that's what I was referring to - or even not just that it's in
their honor, but that it's actually addressed to them rather than to God,
i.e., "God thank you for the angels" would be fine but "Angels thanks for
ministering over us" is to some people potentially iffy. IIUC.
That's correct. AFAIK all tikkunei Shabbat (things recited/sung before
and after Friday night prayers) are of Kabbalistic origin. As such,
many bets are off. Likewise, not a few rabbis have a problem with one
of the hymns composed for Yom Kippur that implores angels to intercede
for us.
