You remind me of the story of Barton's. Barton's was a manufacturer
of kosher chocolates who was a Shomer Shabbos Jew. He had an absolute
requirement that any franchise store must be closed on Shabbos.
OK, so say Barton lives in NYC, and it's 7pm on a Friday - Shabbos began
an hour earlier. Barton has a store in Los Angeles, where it's 3pm, and
his employee in that store sells some chocolate. Did Barton perform
melacha? What if the employee then makes the day's bank deposit, dropping
the money into Barton's account - now did Barton perform melacha? (I
suspect the answer is "no" in both cases but I'm not sure)
What if Barton owns an apartment building, and rent is due on the first.
This month, the first is a Saturday. His tenants - some of whom are Jews -
either a) drop a check into the office mail slot on Shabbos, b) arrange an
electronic transfer such that his bank actually deposits the money into
his account on Shabbos. (does it make a difference?) What if Barton places
envelopes outside his mail slot for people to use to pay rent - must he
remove those envelopes on Shabbos?
That last case seems pretty close to the government Web server scenario.
