If there is any truth to the Xian story about Jesus and money

Not at all. It would just mean that he didn't like that they were
conducting business on the temple steps rather than further off to the
side. I can't imagine that anybody wouldn't have known what the
moneychangers were doing.

I wouldn't dismiss his** ignorance out of hand. From my own personal
experience, I've learned that there is no end to what someone*** may
not know, even if it seems everyone else knows it. And according to
the story, iiuc, he hadn't been in Jerusalem long. Based on my own
personal experience, I can imagine it's something he did the first day
he was there, even if the story attributes it to another day. After
all, the story was written down at least 30 years later, (and fwiw
here by people who iirc had never seen the Temple.)

**or whomever such a story would describe.

***And not always me.

On another point, I'm reminded of the story of George Washington
throwning a silver dollar across the Rappahannock River, something he
never did. Why would he? A dollar was a lot of money.

Or cutting down a cherry tree. IIRC he didn't do that either.
