Dip the bread in the beaten eggs, fry, sprinkle with a little salt
and
pepper, eat. Simple!

Salt and pepper on French Toast? How disgusting!

Guess it's the down to tradition, the traditional English breakfast is
savoury and protein based, the idea of a sweet, carbohydrate based
breakfast
is a relatively new thing (apart from in Scotland where porridge -
oatmeal -
has been standard fare for centuries).

Dunno, whenever I've stayed in Bed & Breakfast's the full english is
healthy; fruit juice
sweet; cornflakes or similar, with or without sugar
savoury; eggs, bacon, sausage, fried bread, fried tomatos, fried
mushrooms, baked beans.
top up; about 4 cups of tea & loads of toast with butter & or marmalde
Followed by a swift war with the French to aid the digestion & work up
an appetite for lunch
oh & before lunch tea & biscuits
-------------------

When I say relatively new, I mean since the 1950, before then, before
Americana really penetrated British culture the only carbs people
regularly
ate at breakfast were either porridge or bread (as toast or fried with a
fry-up).

I didnt really know that, I assumed cornflakes, oaty wheaty type
things were some variants of traditional peasant type dishes.
obviously not kellogs cornflakes etc. However I'm quite new since the
50s too :)

While people on the breadline often had to survive on gruel (porridge,
basiscally), if you are working a job with hard physical labour, in the
fields, down a pit or in a factory, you need proteins to keep you going,
carbs just don't provide enough energy, they burn off too quickly, even low
GI carbs. If you like walking, try this experiment - plan a route up the
Pennine Way, and plan to start walking at say 8:00am, on one day have a big
breakfast of cereals with sugar before you set off, then on another day walk
the same route but have a traditional English breakfast (but kosher of
course, have turkey schnitzel instead of bacon), And I can guarantee you
will notice the difference, on cereals you will feel hungry again by
mid-morning, on proteins you will not feel hungry till at least noon or
early afternoon.

ObJewish: I saw an interesting article just a few days ago about the damage
carbs can dohttp://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/132196.

Thats too much walking for my liking, & theres no mention of pubs in
any of those yomps. Thing is I thought marathon cyclists used to stoke
up on carbs before races. & most British working class food is high on
carbs, potatoes & bread with a token bit of meat thrown in. I dont
really know enough about this sort of thing though & my diet has
always been pretty terrible.

Actually I was forgetting about all the lard in those dishes, cos lard
is like a protein isn't it?
