If someone is simply exercising his or her religion, what's your basis for
boycotting the pharmacy? In your scenario this boycott would be religious
discrimination.
In a sense yes, and in another no. While I can see your point, mine is
"you won't service ALL of my needs -- as is your right --, then you will
get NONE of my business -- as is my right.
Right, I thought you were suggesting calling for a boycott, not simply
refusing to give them your business.
If the pill is legal, and carried by the pharmacy, and there is a vaild
prescription, then they must dispense it. However, nothing forces them
to carry all pills. "We don't have it, try elsewhere" is a valid response.
I suppose that's true - it's more of an issue if they have it for some
purposes but won't dispense it for others.
They can decide whether or not to stock "pill X". If customers run into
situations where they don't have enough stock, then they will shop
elsewhere.
Assuming there is an elsewhere, of course.
Similar to the case of discrimination in a restaurant - nobody's forcing
you to sell burgers, but once you agree to be in the business of selling
burgers you aren't allowed to say you'll only sell them to white people.
Totally different scenario. The better case would be "we don't sell
burgers".
It's the same scenario if they have the pills in stock but won't sell them
for certain purposes. Different scenario from not ording the pills in the
first place.
Another real-life example of this is taking place in Minneapolis, where
the Muslim cab drivers refuse rides to people with seeing-eye dogs and
people who are carrying (sealed) alcoholic beverages. Same case basically
Then they should lose their licenses. The reason is the same as serving
"whites only".
Why? Carrying people with bottles of wine or seeing eye dogs violates
their religion. Why would you force them to do that? Can't the next cab
driver in line pick up the blind guy or the man with the bottle of Chivas?
What's your objection as long as there are other cabs available?
- they're licensed, and part of that license is a DUTY to transport
people. They are simply not allowed to refuse to serve these people, just
as NYC cab drivers are not allowed to refuse to go to Brooklyn (even
though they do in fact refuse).
If reported to hack bureau, they could lose their license.
Correct.
