Feh.
Soviet Union? I believe it was the general rise in the living standards
of the people due to increased trade with the west and, hence, exposure
to the much higher living standards in the West. That caused unrest and
it grew from there. It exploded from within.
I won't comment on any specific policy decision because I don't have
sufficient information. However, the BEST best to avoid conflict is to
have the people who are fighting you be content in their living.
Desperation is the greatest motivator for violence. In that vein I
agree with Netanyahu that Israel should help build up the economy of the
Palestinians. Contented people would rather watch TV or play golf that
fight a war.

Shelly-
Zionists have been making that argument for decades. For years
friends of Israel have pointed out that in the early 20th century,
"Palestine" was a fetid, malaria ridden backwater. It was the
idealistic Zionists who came in, drained the swamps, made the desert
bloom, build roads, schools, hospitals, created a successful economy
and improved the standard of living for all inhabitants. Indeed, Arabs
emigrated to the area in large numbers.
But did this stop the Arabs from hating the Jews? Did this stop the-----------
Arab nations from invading Israel in 1948, vowing to wipe Israel off
the map? Nope.
I agree. I think the Muslim mentality is completely different from
ours. If you could provide every Gazan family with a nice house with a
white picket fence and a two-car garage, they would tear the houses
down and use the components to build more bombs to destroy Israel. I
think the biggest mistake that Westerners make in their thinking is to
keep on operating from the perspective that if we could just provide
the Muslim world with a middle-class lifestyle, they would be happy
and peaceful. Their worldview really is fundamentally different from
ours. Now, Shelly, if you will ask me what I propose for a solution, I
don't have an answer, but I know that improved standard of living
isn't it.

Then there are four options:
(1) Try to improve their lot and see if we can make a change in their
pardigm
(2) Kill them all
(3) Surrender
(4) Have an eternal state of war (where one loss is fini)
I can't think of any other so (1) still seems like the best course.

I agree that we should try to make a change in the paradigm; I don't
agree that "improving their lot" is the only
way to change it.
