In my neck of the woods, much is being made of the first yahrzeit of the
8 students murdered last year at Marcaz haRav Kook.
In my neck of the woods, so much is being made of the many tragedies
that have befallen the Jewish nation in the interim, that the tragedy
your neck is singled out simply losoes itself in the mix.
More than one of my children's schools are part of the (successful)
campaign to dedicate 8 sifrei Torah in their memory.
But it does mean that joy isn't leaping to the fore.
Fortunately the heart possesses two chambers. Zohar Vol 2, p 455a and
Vol 3, p 75a tells of R. Elazar bar R. Shimon learnt from his father
secrets of the Torah concerning the churban, and only now realised how
great a tragedy the destruction of the Temple truly is. And while this
realisation caused him greater distress, the newly leearnt secrets of
Torah caused him greater joy. The two are not contradictory, for the
two emotions reside in different chambers of the heart, as the oft-
quoted explanaition offered there puts it, "Bechiyya teqiya belivai
misitra da vechedva teqiya belivai misitra da" weeping is wedged in my
heart on this side, while joy is wedged in my heart on that [i.e., the
other] side. Joy may leap to the fore, even as sadness does likewise.
One need not cancel out the other.

looking forward to the festivities, even as we weep over tragedy. And
in fact, joy becomes all the more joyful when contrasted with the
sadness that precedes it. See R. Schneor Zalman's Sefer Shel Beinonim
Chaps 26 & 27 for elaboration on this theme.
